The Palace was once made of Wood
The Palace was once made of Wood The majestic stone Mysore Palace we see today is actually "Version 4.0." The previous palace was made mostly of sandalwood and teak, but it burnt to ashes during a royal wedding in 1897. The current Indo-Saracenic masterpiece was built with fireproof materials (granite, brick, and iron) to ensure history never repeated itself.
A Secret in the Church Crypt
St. Philomena’s Church is one of Asia's tallest cathedrals, inspired by the Cologne Cathedral in Germany. But the real curiosity lies beneath the altar. In the crypt, there is a small bone of the 3rd-century Greek Saint Philomena herself, brought all the way from Italy. The church was built by the Maharaja of Mysore specifically to house this relic-a beautiful example of the royal family's legendary religious tolerance.
The Birthplace of the Word "Akashvani"
The Birthplace of the Word "Akashvani" Most people know Akashvani as the official name of All India Radio. However, few know the name originated in Mysuru. In 1935, Prof. M.V. Gopalaswamy started India's first private radio station at his home (Vittal Vihar). He coined the name "Akashvani" (Voice from the Sky). The name was so poetic and fitting that the Indian government adopted it for the national broadcaster in 1957.
Mysuru - The City That Launched India's First Rocket
Long before space rockets, Mysuru, Karnataka changed the history of warfare forever. In the 1780s, the world's first metal-cylinder, iron-cased rocket artillery was developed right here in Mysore city by Tipu Sultan and Hyder Ali - far more advanced than anything the British had ever seen. These powerful Mysore Rockets shocked European armies and were later studied and copied by the British.
